WHAT SMELLS?
What Smells? A cool idea we decided to try…
“What smells?” is a one-night collaboration between live music and handcrafted essential oils. Pine & Pear Apothecary will present three custom blends that have been created to complement Over Yonder’s debut album, Valley Grove. Over Yonder is an acoustic duo based in Northfield, Minnesota, consisting of Brian Johnson on guitar and Martha Larson on cello. Their vibe sounds good, feels good, and come January 25th, it will smell good. (Stay with me…)
I’ve known Brian and Martha long enough that attending their shows feels familiar in the best way. Casual and somehow nostalgic, their performances evoke in me the perfect combination of emotions and laughs. And if you’ve had the pleasure of catching them live, you will recognize Grayson, Brian’s dog, resting at his feet while he plays. I admit that I look forward to seeing Grayson as much as I enjoy the music.
Over the past three years, Over Yonder has become well-known and loved in Northfield and Cannon Falls, and their popularity has been spreading to other Minnesota towns such as Red Wing and Faribault. They’ve built a devoted following through their brilliant music, witty humor, and a deep commitment to their craft. In 2025 alone, they performed more than fifty live shows, expanded their setlist to nearly one hundred songs, received multiple state arts grants, and brought live music to communities across southern Minnesota through concerts, markets, festivals, and community-focused performances.
On November 7, 2025, Over Yonder released their first album, Valley Grove, an exciting milestone in their journey. The album reflects their talent, dedication, and creative exploration. Each song is both technically impressive and deeply human. Download it yesterday, it’s that good.
When Brian invited me to collaborate on a set of essential oil blends inspired by his album, I was honored and excited about the fun I knew would come with the challenge. At Pine & Pear Apothecary, my work centers on creating small-batch blends with intention. I craft slowly, thoughtfully, and always with specific inspiration. This collaboration offered the opportunity to bring two arts together – music and scent - while respecting the individuality of each.
Three blends were created exclusively for this collaboration and will be available only at Imminent Brewing Co. on January 25th. Those who attend will have the opportunity to purchase both the Valley Grove album and the limited-run Valley Grove essential oil blend set.
Come out and kick it at a small-town brewery, listen to some fantastic music, smell some oils, say hi to Grayson, and experience it all your own way. We hope to see you there!
